On the Passage of H.4885
Breaking!
Massachusetts has passed a new major gun bill which greatly impacts the way Firearm Dealers and Citizens in the state of Massachusetts will operate.
We will be updating our site accordingly with more helpful information and re-categorizing our products in alignment with the new legislation.
The legislation was not signed with an Emergency Clause, meaning it will come into full force after 90 days. Though any “Assault Weapons” must be purchased and registered before 8/1/2024. Our large collection of Pre-Ban Firearms appear to still be transferable. Pistols transfers also look to be unchanged. There may be some hurdles for pump, lever, and break action long guns (rifle & shotgun) come October.
In the meantime, we recommend reading the law yourself, and parsing it out. You can also head over to GOAL’s page on the legislation to have another perspective on what is coming down
Please keep in mind GOAL is continually updating their information, and there does seem to be conflicting opinions within their own information. In one spot they claim Rimfire is exempt from the Assault Weapon definition, but in another spot they claim Rimfire is not. The bill’s official language defines an Assault style weapon as being a Centerfire rifle. Of note is that in the original Healey enforcement notice, the following was written:
The following are examples of weapons that are not copies or duplicates of enumerated
weapons under G.L. c. 140 §121: any .17 or .22 caliber rimfire rifle;…
So it’s likely that Rimfire is intended to be exempt.
